AbstractVegetation indices have been widely used in numerous applications to detect land use change and to derive biophysical parameters related to vegetation status. During the last few years sugarcane has greatly expanded its cultivated area. Therefore, the direct and indirect land use cover change in response to sugarcane expansion has becoming a relevant issue to evaluate the real benefit of renewable biofuels in order to partially mitigate greenhouse gases emissions. The main goal of this study was to identify the prior land use of the converted sugarcane field either from agricultural or pasture land, based on EVI (Enhanced Vegetation Index) time-series profiles derived from MODIS data acquired from 2001 to 2007. This study was carried out over 126 converted sugarcane fields that were previously used either by crop fields or by pasture, in Paraná State. Annual EVI time-series profiles for each year (2001 to 2007) were generated for the sugarcane expanded fields over agriculture and pasture land which were then compared to the sugarcane profile of 2007. EVI time-series successfully mimic not only the sugarcane crop phenology but also the typical spectral trajectory of agricultural and pasture land indicating that the EVI time-series have the potential to identify the previous land occupation of the recent planted sugarcane fields.
